A visitor record is the document Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issues to let you remain in Canada longer as a visitor. It is not a visa, it does not let you work or study, and you apply for it from inside Canada before your current status expires.

What a visitor record is
A visitor record extends how long you are authorised to stay in Canada as a temporary resident. It is issued inside Canada and it replaces the stay period you were originally given at the port of entry.
People confuse it with a visitor visa, and the difference matters. A visitor visa, formally a temporary resident visa, is placed in your passport and controls whether you may travel to Canada. A visitor record controls how long you may remain once you are already here. A visitor record does not let you re-enter Canada on its own, so if you leave the country you may still need a valid visa or an eTA to return.
A visitor record also does not grant permission to work or to study. Those are separate authorisations with their own applications.
Apply before your current status expires
The date that governs your stay is the one on your visitor record, your study or work permit, or the stamp in your passport. If there is no stamp and no document, the standard period applies from the day you entered.
Applying before that date matters. While a complete application submitted in time is being processed, you may remain in Canada under maintained status until a decision is made. If you apply after the date has passed, maintained status does not apply.
Processing times change constantly. Rather than quote a number that will be wrong next month, check the current figure on the IRCC website and apply well ahead of it.
What the application asks you to show
An application for a visitor record is a request to remain a temporary resident. The material you submit is there to show an officer that you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the authorised stay.

An officer weighs the whole picture. No single document decides the outcome, and nobody can tell you in advance what an officer will decide.
Applying from inside Canada
Applications are submitted online through an IRCC account. You complete the forms, upload your supporting material, pay the fee, and receive a confirmation.
Keep the confirmation. It is the evidence of the date you applied, and that date is what establishes whether you applied before your status expired.
If your circumstances change while the application is open, such as a new address or a new passport, update IRCC rather than waiting to be asked.
If your status has already expired
Losing status is not automatically the end of your time in Canada. There is a separate process called restoration of status, and it has its own conditions and its own deadline.
If your status has expired, read restoration of status in Canada, which covers what restoration involves and the window in which it must be requested. Speak with a licensed representative promptly, because the window is limited.
Visiting family in Canada
Many visitor record applications come from people already in Canada with family here, such as a parent visiting an adult child, or a spouse waiting on another application.
If your longer-term intention is to stay permanently, the visitor record is a way to hold lawful status while a different application is prepared or decided. Those are separate processes and each has its own requirements. A consultation is where your situation gets reviewed against the options that may apply to it.
Some families may also be looking at the spousal sponsorship route, which is a permanent residence pathway rather than a temporary one.
