Express Entry runs two kinds of invitation rounds. General rounds invite the highest-ranked candidates in the pool. Category-based rounds invite candidates who meet a specific category, and healthcare is one of those categories. If you have eligible healthcare work experience, a healthcare draw can invite you at a lower Comprehensive Ranking System score than a general round would.

What a category-based draw is
Express Entry is the system Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada uses to manage applications for three federal economic programs. Candidates create a profile, are scored on the Comprehensive Ranking System, and wait in a pool. IRCC then holds rounds of invitations.
Category-based selection lets IRCC hold a round that only considers candidates who meet a defined category, such as a set of healthcare occupations or a language ability. Everyone in the pool who meets the category is ranked by CRS score, and invitations go to the top of that ranking down to a cutoff IRCC sets for that round.
The categories, and the occupations inside each one, are set by IRCC and published on its website. They can change. The authoritative list is always the one on canada.ca, not a third-party summary.
Who the healthcare category covers
The healthcare category is defined by occupation. IRCC lists the eligible occupations by their National Occupational Classification code, and a candidate needs recent, continuous work experience in one of them to be considered in a healthcare round.
Occupations that have appeared in the category include registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, pharmacists, physiotherapists and a range of other regulated health roles, alongside some support roles. Which roles are included in any given round is determined by IRCC at the time of that round.
Being in a healthcare occupation does not by itself make anyone eligible. The experience has to meet the category definition, and the candidate still has to be eligible for one of the underlying Express Entry programs.

The cutoff score differs from round to round. Because the healthcare pool is smaller than the whole pool, cutoffs in healthcare rounds have often been lower than in general rounds. That is a pattern in past rounds, not a promise about future ones.
When is the next healthcare draw?
IRCC does not pre-announce rounds. Each round is published after it takes place, with the date, the category, the number of invitations and the lowest score invited. The only reliable way to know a healthcare round has happened is IRCC's own rounds page.
Anyone who tells you the date of the next healthcare draw is guessing. What a representative can do is help you keep your profile complete and current so that if a round happens, you are in the pool and correctly categorised.
Check the current and past rounds on canada.ca. The figures there are the ones that matter.
Your CRS score in a healthcare round
Your CRS score is calculated the same way in every round. What changes in a category round is who you are competing against. A score that would not reach the cutoff in a general round may reach it in a healthcare round, because the comparison set is smaller.
That is why keeping the score accurate matters. Language results, an educational credential assessment, and correctly documented work experience all feed the score, and each has its own validity period. An expired language test silently drops your score.
There is no minimum score that secures an invitation in a healthcare round, and no representative can promise one.
Getting the profile right
Category rounds turn on detail. The occupation code on your profile has to match the work you actually did, the experience has to be within the period the category requires, and it has to be provable when IRCC asks for reference letters after an invitation.
Mistakes here are common and costly. A profile that claims the wrong occupation code, or that counts experience that does not meet the category definition, can lead to an invitation being issued and then the application being refused.
Healthcare and Alberta
Alberta also runs its own provincial pathways through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, some of which have targeted healthcare roles. A federal healthcare round and a provincial pathway are separate routes with separate rules, and a consultation is where the two get compared against your situation.
