Immigration Consultant Calgary

Regulated immigration consultant for Calgary and Alberta. Shirani Jenita Daniel, RCIC-IRB (R705794), meets clients by video from the Edmonton office.

Applicant on a video consultation from home

You are in Calgary, and the first question is not which city your representative works from. It is what your situation needs next, and whether the person you pay is authorized to handle it. A permit close to expiry, a sponsorship application, a letter from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and a question about citizenship are four different questions with four different answers.

Imprint Immigration Services reviews those situations by video for people in Calgary and elsewhere in Alberta. The practice has one office, in Edmonton, led by Shirani Jenita Daniel, RCIC-IRB, licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) under Licence R705794. There is no Calgary office, no Calgary address and no Calgary phone line. This page sets out how the work is actually done at a distance.

Start with your records, not with a program name

Bring the documents rather than the label. A permit, a decision letter, a receipt, an application already submitted: those describe your situation exactly, where a program name found online usually describes someone else’s. Write a short note covering your current status, what has been applied for, what has been decided, and any date printed on a letter. Note any gap rather than recreating a document.

Have the records to hand in a readable copy on the day, with your questions written down, because documents get read on screen together. If a letter or permit carries a deadline, say so when you book: booking a consultation does not pause a government deadline. If the date is close, phone (825) 435-1101 rather than waiting on email.

What we look at

The matters reviewed for Calgary and Alberta clients

The same person handles these files for Calgary clients as for Edmonton clients.

  • Work permits and status questions. Current authorization, application history and employer documents are read together. An employer’s labour market process and a worker’s own permit application are separate processes. See work permit services.
  • Spousal and partner sponsorship. Residence, relationship evidence and travel plans each need their own attention. Any work authorization is reviewed separately, never assumed. See sponsorship services.
  • Refusals and procedural fairness concerns. Bring the complete correspondence and the original application. A concern raised by an officer before a decision and a refusal decision are different stages, and what follows depends on which one you are at. See refusals and appeals.
  • Citizenship questions. A grant of citizenship and citizenship through a parent are different applications with different starting documents. See citizenship services.
  • Refugee claims and representation before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). The Board has four divisions: the RPD, the Refugee Appeal Division, the Immigration Appeal Division and the Immigration Division. See our refugee claims page.

Express Entry, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program and the rest of the list are set out on the Edmonton immigration consultant page. Complex cases are not an exception here. They are what we do.

Step by step

How a file is handled from Edmonton, step by step

  1. Book. Choose a video slot on the booking page. The appointment is 30 minutes and costs $50 plus 5% GST.
  2. Send your records. Before the call you send copies of current permits, earlier decisions, any refusal letter and any IRCC or IRB correspondence. When you book you are told what to prepare and how to send it. Keep your originals.
  3. Consult. Shirani reviews your status and history, explains how the relevant programs and processes are structured, and sets out what each would ask of you.
  4. Sign a written agreement. Representation begins under a separate written agreement recording the scope of the work and the fees. Imprint does not take payment for representation before it is signed.
  5. Representation. IRCC applications are prepared with you and submitted through the IRCC secure online account, with Shirani recorded as your authorized representative. IRB matters follow the Board’s own procedure, below. Document requests and decisions are handled by email and video.

IRB hearings by video: what the Board’s own rule says

This worries people outside Edmonton most, so it is worth stating precisely. The IRB’s practice notice on scheduling says all IRB hearings are scheduled as virtual hearings by default, for hearings scheduled on or after 5 September 2023.

It also says the Board grants a request for an in-person hearing where it decides one is necessary for reasons of fairness and natural justice, or for other compelling reasons such as the complexity or duration of the proceeding. A request goes to the relevant registry in writing, within the timeframes that division sets.

For refugee claims, the RPD holds virtual hearings on Microsoft Teams. The IRB sends the Notice to Appear to your counsel, who shares it with you, and the joining link arrives about five days before the hearing. So a claimant in Calgary and counsel in Edmonton join the same hearing from where each of them is. If the Board grants an in-person hearing, the Notice to Appear names the office and the arrival time, and attendance is planned around it.

Who will review your circumstances, and how to check the licence

Only certain people may charge a fee to advise on an immigration application: lawyers and paralegals in good standing with a Canadian law society, notaries in good standing with the Chambre des notaires du Quebec, and immigration consultants in good standing with the CICC. IRCC states that it will not deal with representatives who charge a fee but are not authorized, and that it may return or refuse an application where one was used. The College states that advising on Canadian immigration for a fee without one of those licences is an offence punishable by law.

So check before you pay anyone, including us. Open the CICC public register, search by College ID R705794, and read both tabs. Discipline lists any revocations, suspensions, restrictions, current proceedings and past decisions. Licensee Details shows the current licence class and whether the status is active. For this licence the register records Class L3 – RCIC-IRB, active since 4 June 2020, employment at Imprint Immigration Services Inc. in Edmonton.

That class matters for the work above: an RCIC-IRB is authorized before the IRB as well as before IRCC, which not every class covers. The difference is explained on our licence verification page, and there is more about Shirani and the practice. Distance is not the risk when you choose a representative. An unverified licence is.

Book a video consultation

If you are in Calgary or elsewhere in Alberta and want a regulated RCIC-IRB to read your records, book a video consultation. It is 30 minutes, $50 plus 5% GST, with no obligation to go further. It is a paid review of your situation, not a decision: IRCC and the IRB decide applications, and what can be said about any file depends on the circumstances and the records available. Questions before booking can go to info@imprintimmigration.com.

Does Imprint have a Calgary office or a Calgary phone number?

No. Imprint has one office, at 300-9006 132 Ave NW in Edmonton, and one phone number, (825) 435-1101. Calgary and Alberta clients are served by video from that office. If a listing anywhere shows a Calgary address or a second phone number for Imprint, it is not ours. Checking a consultant’s licence tells you more than checking how near they are.

Do I need to travel to Edmonton at any point?

Usually not. Consultations are by video, IRCC applications are submitted through its online account, and the IRB schedules hearings as virtual hearings by default. In-person appointments at the Edmonton office are available if you prefer them. Where an application or the Board requires an original document, you are told what to send and where, and it is arranged in advance rather than sprung on you.

Can you represent me at an IRB hearing if I live in Calgary?

Yes. Shirani Jenita Daniel holds the RCIC-IRB class of licence, which authorizes representation before the IRB as well as before IRCC. The Board’s practice notice schedules hearings as virtual by default, so you join from Calgary and counsel joins from Edmonton. If the Board grants an in-person hearing for fairness or other compelling reasons, the Notice to Appear names the office and attendance is planned around it.

Does booking a consultation protect a deadline on my letter?

No. Booking a consultation does not pause or extend a government deadline, and neither does requesting records about your file. If a letter or permit carries a date, identify it when you arrange the appointment and phone (825) 435-1101 if the date is close. Advice on what a specific deadline requires depends on your circumstances and the document itself.

How do I check Licence R705794 myself?

Open the CICC public register and search by College ID R705794. The profile opens on the Discipline tab, which lists any revocations, suspensions, restrictions, current proceedings and past decisions. The Licensee Details tab shows the current licence class and whether the status is active. The register is the College’s own record and anyone can use it. Run the same check on any consultant before you pay them.

Can I discuss a file another representative already submitted?

Yes. Bring the submitted application and whatever correspondence you have, including anything sent to you by IRCC or the IRB, so the scope of a review can be discussed properly. What is possible after a decision depends on the stage the file has reached and the records available, which is why the documents matter more than a summary of them.
