Alberta AAIP Update: New Streams and Eligibility Changes for 2026

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program nominates people for permanent residence in Alberta. It is run jointly by the governments of Alberta and Canada, and the division of labour between them is the thing to understand first.

Alberta nominates. IRCC decides. A nomination is not permanent residence. Alberta's own wording is that IRCC manages permanent residence applications and the Government of Canada makes the final decisions on them.

One correction worth making

A good deal of material online still says the Alberta Opportunity Stream is paused. We checked the current program pages, including the landing page, the streams page, the Alberta Opportunity Stream pages and the official updates log, and no current stream carries a pause, closure or “not accepting applications” notice. The only genuinely closed items are on Alberta's expired streams page, and those closed in 2018.

How the worker streams actually work now

Since 30 September 2024 the worker streams run on an expression of interest system, and it is invitation-only. Alberta states you can only apply to a worker stream if you are invited to do so, and to be invited you must complete a Worker Expression of Interest.

A submitted expression of interest goes into a pool where it is scored and ranked on a points grid. It stays valid for 12 months. Alberta runs draws during that period, selecting on scores, provincial labour market needs and priorities, available nominations and application volumes. Selected candidates are invited by email. An expression of interest not selected within 12 months expires.

Alberta is candid about its discretion: it does not guarantee that an expression of interest will be assessed or actioned, or that someone meeting the draw parameters will be invited. You indicate a preferred stream, but Alberta may invite you to a different one, or not at all. You may hold only one expression of interest at a time.

What changed in 2026

• February and March 2026. New fields collect wage and hours for candidates with an Alberta job offer. Expressions of interest submitted from 25 February that are missing this information are not considered in those draws.
• April 2026. A fee now applies to submit a Worker Expression of Interest. It was previously free, and it is non-refundable if cancelled.
• May 2026. An edit function was added. Editing does not extend or change the 12 month validity. Candidates can also reject an invitation to a stream they are not interested in and return to the pool, provided they do so before the 15 day invitation period ends.
• June 2026. An Eligibility Explorer tool was launched.
• August 2026. Alberta received an additional federal allocation, and the entrepreneur stream pages were updated to explain an existing economic establishment requirement. Alberta states program eligibility criteria and requirements have not changed and existing expressions of interest need no update.

One change from late 2025 carries into this year. The Rural Renewal Stream was reworked effective 1 January 2026, with endorsement allocation limits for designated communities, one year validity on Endorsement of Candidate Letters, a TEER-based endorsement model, and a requirement that foreign nationals inside Canada hold a valid work permit at the time of application and assessment. Alberta attributes this to a reduced federal allocation.

Also still in effect from March 2025: the Alberta Express Entry Stream no longer invites candidates under the family connection and occupation in demand pathway, though family connection points remain in the expression of interest grid.

The streams

Alberta currently lists worker streams including the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the Alberta Express Entry Stream, the Rural Renewal Stream, the Tourism and Hospitality Stream and a Dedicated Health Care Pathway, alongside entrepreneur streams for rural entrepreneurs, graduate entrepreneurs, farms and foreign graduate entrepreneurs. Alberta's own pages are inconsistent about the total count, so it is worth reading the current streams page rather than relying on a number.
