CRS Score: How to Maximize Your Points Before the Next Express Entry Draw

The Comprehensive Ranking System scores an Express Entry profile against a published set of factors. Knowing which group a point comes from is what makes the score legible, because the groups behave differently.

The four groups

• Core and human capital factors. Age, level of education, official language proficiency, and Canadian work experience.
• Spouse or common-law partner factors, where they apply. Their education, official language proficiency and Canadian work experience.
• Skill transferability factors. Combinations of education, foreign work experience, and a certificate of qualification in a trade occupation.
• Additional points. A sibling living in Canada, French language skills, post-secondary education in Canada, and a provincial or territorial nomination.

Core and human capital and the spouse factors share a single combined ceiling, which is why the section maximums cannot simply be added together to reach a total. IRCC publishes the grid and it is the authority on how each factor is counted.

One change that invalidates a lot of older advice

As of 25 March 2025, IRCC removed job offer points from the Comprehensive Ranking System for current and future candidates in the pool. Any article, video or calculator that still awards points for a job offer is describing a system that no longer exists. This is the single most common outdated claim in circulation about the ranking.

Where the points are documentary

Every factor is assessed on what is filed, not on what is true in general. Language points come from a test result, education points from an educational credential assessment where the education was obtained outside Canada, work experience from evidence of the work. A factor without acceptable documentation behind it is not a factor in the score.

French language ability is worth attention because it appears twice: in the core language factors and again in the additional points group. Candidates with functional French sometimes have not tested it.

Use the official calculator, and read its disclaimer

IRCC publishes an interactive calculator on its check-your-score page. It is worth quoting its own caution, because it matters: the tool is intended solely for general guidance and reference purposes, and where its result and the Express Entry electronic system disagree, the system governs.

One further note on currency. IRCC is running a consultation on reforms to the federal high skilled programs and the ranking system itself. The factor groups above are current as at the date shown below, and the official pages are the place to confirm before relying on them.
